Member development

Four tracks · Defined Roles · Honest Growth

The Medical Compass is organized into four flexible development tracks that give students different ways to explore medicine. Members can participate in one or multiple tracks based on their interests, allowing students to build a personalized path through the organization.

Because this club is new, we cannot guarantee placement, mentor pairing, or reference letters for every member. We do our best to connect interested members with opportunities as they become available — these tracks will grow in depth as our partnerships develop.

FOUR DIRECTIONS. ONE COMPASS.

DIRECTION ONE: TRUE NORTH

Research

The Research Tracks help students move beyond simply being told to "get research" and instead understand how to identify meaningful research opportunities, approach investigators, and determine what kind of research experience fits their interests. Also, students will better understand why research matters, what research actually looks like, and how to find a research experience that fits their interests. In year one this means guidance, introductions, and shared resources rather than guaranteed placements.

  • Help with lab outreach, applications, and networking
  • Research workshop sessions with student-driven discussion
  • Outside faculty feedback when we're able to arrange it
  • Basic milestone tracking: hours and contributions members choose to log

As the club matures, we hope to formalize a reference process with faculty supervisors. This is a goal, not a current guarantee.

DIRECTION TWO: DUE EAST

Clinical Skills

Provides students with introductory, non-certifying exposure to clinical environments, patient interaction, and foundational clinical concepts through interactive programming. Members will be able to interact with clinical scenarios, practice introductory skills, and reflect on what patient care actually entails. Content and pace depend on which instructors we can recruit.

  • Vital signs basics: blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, oxygen saturation
  • Introductory overview of EKG lead placement, glucometer use, and pulse oximetry
  • General documentation practices
  • Clinical Case and  Vital Signs Challenges

The club does not certify members in any of these skills. We encourage official certification (MA, EMT, CNA) through licensed programs and can provide a letter documenting participation.

Mentorship track: We connect interested members with residents, MD/PhD students, or physicians for informal

DIRECTION THREE: SOUTHBOUND

Mentorship

We connect interested members with residents, MD/PhD students, or physicians for informal mentorship and informational conversations, depending on outside volunteers' availability. The aim is to replace polished one-directional "panel" model with genuine interaction and long-term exposure to different medical pathways.

  • Outreach to potential physician, resident, and MD/PhD volunteers
  • Group mentorship and panel-style sessions as a starting point
  • 1:1 matching as capacity allows
  • Guidance on MD, MD/PhD, DO, PA, and other routes into medicine

We cannot promise a formal 1:1 match for every member, especially in our first year. A reference process is foreseeable in the future.

Community Engagement track: We connect members with local organizations doing healthcare, public health, and outreach

DIRECTION FOUR: WESTWARD

Community Engagement

We connect members with local organizations doing healthcare, public health, and outreach work, and build the fundraising relationships that support them. In year one this means outreach, site visits, and small-scale events rather than large formal partnerships.

  • Research and propose local organizations worth partnering with
  • Outreach for site visits and volunteer opportunities
  • Small-scale fundraising events directed to named partners
  • Basic participation tracking for members who take part

As the club matures, we hope to build sustained local partnerships, transparent recurring fundraising, and eventually one international medical or public health partner. This is a goal, not a current guarantee.

Goal state

Reference & documentation system

As the club grows, we want to build toward a structured reference system. This is an aspiration for future years, not a feature we can offer in year one.

  1. 1

    Member enrolls in a track

  2. 2

Club tracks hours and participation as reported by the member

  3. 3

A supervising professional reviews contributions, when involved and willing

  4. 4

Any reference issued reflects only documented, verified participation

The club prepares and exposes members to research and clinical environments — it does not certify or guarantee outcomes. Treat club documentation as a supplement to, not a replacement for, your own initiative.
